Section 1 Main Idea: The Renaissance was a renewed sense of learning and the arts which started in the 1400s as a result of the growing power and wealth of Italian city-states.
The Beginning -Changes in society -Black death reduced population -More food available = Decrease in prices (supply v. demand) -Spend money on other things -Regions began trading for things they didn’t produce -Rise of city-states -Cities in Italy became hubs of commercialism -Venice = trade with Asia / shipbuilding -Milan = agriculture, silk, weapons -Florence = banking -Became very wealthy -Found ways to show off their wealth (paintings, sculptures, etc)
Renaissance Ideas -New ideas slowly came about in the late 1400s and early 1500s -Renaissance -Ancient civilizations -Greek scholars brought long-lost works to Italy -Began to think about things in a different way -Humanism -Movement that focused on rhetoric, grammar, poetry, history, Latin, human potential -Different from church’s education -Humanists -Individual accomplishment -Started by Petrarch and Boccaccio -Wrote books in the vernacular (everyday language) -Different from before -Progress made in anatomy, astronomy, medicine -Secular (non-religious) writers -Focus on the individual -Castiglione -How a Renaissance man should act/behave -Machiavelli -How govt’s should rule -Govt must do anything to survive -Started belief “the state is separate entity from its ruler” -Science -Challenged Church’s teachings -Sun is center of universe -Earth revolves around sun
Renaissance Art -Medici family (Florence) took the lead in promoting the arts -Style/Technique -Realism -Perspective (3-D objects) (Another site) -More focused on Roman/Greek gods -Focus on human personality -Inventor, engineer, scientist, -One of world’s greatest figures -Michelangelo -Raphael -Painter and architect -Bramante -Designed St. Peter’s Basilica
