Uniform Crime Reports

-The UCR is an annual publication presenting official statistics on the rates and trends in crime in the US

-Charts the degree/nature of the increases/decreases in crime

        -Published by the FBI

        -Structure

                -Approximately 17,000 police agencies contributed

                -Crime Clock

                        -Represents annual ratio of crime to time

                -Part I offenses

-Most serious crimes (homicide, rape, robbery, burglary, robbery, arson)

                -Part II offenses

                        -Less serious crimes (vandalism, drug-related)

                -Crime index

                        -Total number of crimes committed

                        -Total crime index, violent crime, property crime

                -Crime rate

                        -Part I offenses per 100,000 citizens

 

The Extent of Crime

        -Included in Part I offenses are all crimes police are aware of

        -Part II includes only arrests

-What about crimes that are not reported to police? What about crimes that police do not make an arrest?

        -NOT INCLUDED!
