Methods of Dispute Resolution

        -Sometimes it is better to resolve conflict w/o going to court

        -Negotiation

-People involved discuss problem and try to reach an acceptable solution

                        -Reach a “settlement”

                -Most court cases

                -Sometimes informal

                        -Sometimes people hire lawyers

        -Arbitration

-People involved have someone listen to arguments and make a decision

                        -Like a trial, but much more informal

                        -Can be binding

        -Mediation

                -Third party helps disputing parties settle the problem

                        -Mediators do not issue decisions

                        -Ombudsman
