New Roles for Women

        -Homemaker’s role changed

        -More went to school

        -Many women were progressives

                -Allowed them to change society

                -Jane Addams (Hull House)

                -Cary Nation (prohibition)

 

Suffrage for Women

        -Suffrage = right to vote

        -National American Woman Suffrage Association (1890)

                -Elizabeth C. Stanton and Susan B. Anthony

                -Focused on states allowing women to vote

                        -Many western states gave women right

        -Some didn’t want to give women right to vote

                -Voting was a “man’s job”

                        -Women would lose their “beauty and charm”

                -Women would vote for higher wages and taxes

 

        -19th Amendment

                -Women argued they were supporting war effort

                        -Deserved right to vote

                -Ratified in 1920
