Racism

-African Americans weren’t the only ones discriminated against

        -Immigrants (Chinese, Eastern Europeans, Jews)

-Segregation increased in the South

        -Had poll taxes, literacy tests

                -Some literacy tests in Latin!

                -Unfair to poor whites, blacks

        -Jim Crow laws (more examples)

-Plessy v. Ferguson

                -1896

-Supreme Court ruled that segregation is constitutional so long as it is equal

                -“Separate but equal” doctrine

 

African Americans Fight Back

        -Booker T. Washington

                -Founded Tuskegee Institute

                        -George Washington Carver

                        -Better education is the way to get equality

        -W.E.B. DuBois

                -Helped start NAACP

        -This increased violence against African Americans

                -Lynchings

                -KKK

 

Assimilation

        -Some people wanted to “Americanize” immigrants

                -Others thought they were only problems

                        -Drunks, gamblers

                                -“Ruining” society

        -Some people saw immigrant problems as “white peoples” too

                -Working, living conditions
