Who are Hippies?

        -New generation of young Americans

                -New music, clothing, ways of life

        -Kids started blaming their parents for the mess we were in

                -Cold War

                -Civil Rights problems

                -Vietnam

 

Counterculture Events

-People were frustrated with doing things “the way their parents did them”

                -College, jobs

                        -Students went on strike

                                -College courses “out of touch”

        -Hippies started rejecting everything of past generations

                -“Do your own thing

-Started using profanity, dressing provocatively, using drugs, nudity, permissive sexual behavior

                        -Shock the older generations

                        -Drug addiction increased, STDs increased

        -Some tried to “get in touch” with nature

 

Events coming from the Hippies

        -Pop art (Andy Worhol)

                -Artists started using “everyday” objects in their works

                -Make it more appealing to the public

        -Women’s Movement

                -The Feminine Mystique (book) was the spark

                        -Said women were not content staying at home

                -National Organization for Women (NOW)

                        -Lobbies for women’s rights

        -Music

                -Beatles, Rolling Stones

                -Several black musicians came up

                        -Jimi Hendrix (another site)

                -Electric guitars, the amp

                -Woodstock (August 1969)

                        -300,000 young Americans attended it

                        -Highlight of Hippie movement

                        -Peace, love, sex, drugs, and music
