Rosie the Riveter

        -During G.D., gov’t tried to keep women from working

                -Now need their help

        -Gov’t put out ads for women to work

                -“Do your patriotic duty and help defeat Fascism”

        -More than 4m. women entered workforce

                -Did lots of “manly” jobsàDrove trucks, built machinery

                -Still paid less than men

                -African American women had hard time finding work

        -Most people felt that this was just temporary

                -Would quit when war was over

 

 

Japanese-American Relocation

        -US was not as paranoid in WWII as it was in WWI

        -Japanese Americans forced to relocation centers (Feb. 1942)

                -Basically prison camps

-Some thought Japanese were going to spy for Japan

        -Very racistànot unusual, though

-We had no proof of disloyalty

-Most were imprisoned until1945

-Supreme Court upheld constitutionality

-Japanese forced to give up jobs, homes

        -Had to sell for way less than value
